The project being executed for Rail Vikas Nigam Limited in Southern Railways is located near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The scope of work involves gauge conversion of Meter Gauge to Broad Gauge between Attur and Salem section over a length of 70 kilometers including loops. The district is rich in mineral deposits like Magnesite, Bauxite, Granite, Limestone, Quartz and Iron ore. Allied industries like magnesite mining, cement manufacture, refractory bricks manufacture, aluminium smelting, etc thrive well. Products such as Textiles, Yarn, Granites, Readymade Garments, Coir Products, Textile, Automobile, Poultry, etc are exported from here not only across India but also internationally. Salem is also the home of the Salem Steel plant. Therefore, it was decided that to improve connectivity all meter gauge railway lines are to be converted in broad gauge to facilitate uninterrupted movement of cargo.
The project includes modification/reconstruction of over 140 minor bridges and 9 major bridges, 49 level crossings, 8 stations including constructions of 14 platforms and shelters and signaling and telecommunication work.
